Different Types of Rangoli in India
RANGOLI is the popular name for this ephemeral floor art all over India however, traditionally it is known with different other vernacular names in different parts of the country, like Rangoli in Maharashtra, Kolam in Tamilnadu, Chowkpurana in Northern India, Aripan in Bihar, Alpana in Bengal, Mandana in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Muggulu in Andhra Pradesh, Jhoti or Chita in Orissa, Aipan in the Himalayan region, Gahuli or Sathiya in Gujarat, Poovidal in Kerala, Rangavali in Karnataka, Sanjhi in Mathura & Vrindavan, and so on.
The different names are not merely through the vernacular origin but the major differences lie in the characteristic features of the rangoli designs and motifs, the different ways in which the dot grids are used to draw the designs (or are drawn without a dot grid), along with the different beliefs & significance and the various materials used. Raangoli
In Maharashtra it is known as Raangoli
(Rang - Colour, Avalli - Creepers/Rows). Thus Raangoli means rows of colours.
Aripan
In Bihar, it is known as Aripana, which means smear. It is a type of Mithila art that originated in the village of Madhubani.
Mandana
In Rajasthan it is known as Mandana. Fine mesh-work of lines in the design is its typical feature.
Gahuli / Sathiya
