Various rangoli styles, it's characteristic features, different motifs, and ways in which the dot grids are used to draw the designs (or are drawn without a dot grid) and the various materials used, differ from region to region thus forming a specific Regional Rangoli style of a particular to that state or community. Also, there are evidences of specific Traditional Rangolis (as per different cultures of India) drawn on a particular festival or ritual or a special day of the year. Thus for two broad categories Regional Rangoli and Traditional Rangoli.​

Rangoli Art can be grouped into two broad catagories. Firstly based on its "Region of Origin", and seccondly based on its "Traditional"significance.
Based on the "Region of origin" of the Rangoli, which predominantly dipicts a unique style specific to that region, It comprises of use of certain motifs, dots, shape of the rangoli, or type of dot grids used. While there are specific types of historically known "Traditional Rangoli" designs, which are particularly drawn on specific festivals and ceremonies, and same designs are followed for years and years by the communities.
