In Karnataka it is Known as Rangavalli or Rangavallikalu. The design style and rangoli motifs follow curved as well as straight lines whereby the patterns are similar or a combination of raangoli of Maharashtra and kolam of Tamilnadu and aremostly filled with colours. Traditionally the rangavalli motifs and patterns follow parallel dot grid but freehand floral rangavalli’s drawn without any dot grid are also popular. They are drawn with rice flower paste or rangoli powder of limestone rocks.
In Karnataka rangavalli is also made through beautiful patterns & shapes created through the arrangements of small and bright fire lamps (Diya). Although keeping Diyas on a rangoli is an integral part of all traditional and regional rangoli’s, however in Karnataka especially, the entire rangoli is created by only arranging diyas on the floor or ground to form a special beautiful pattern of dazzling light. It is believed that the Rangavalli drawn in front of your entrances generates positive vibes Goddess Lakshmi in your homes and the diyas on a rangoli creates a pure atmosphere devoid of negative vibes or evil powers.
