Types of Rangoli In India- Raangoli

Updated: Jul 29

In Maharashtra it is known as Raangoli or Rangavalli. (Rang - Colour & Avalli – creepers/rows) Thus Raangoli means beautiful rows of colours. There are two popular Rangoli styles in Maharashtra. Tipkyanchi Raangoli (Dot Rangoli), which is the main regional style of Maharashtra, and the Sanskar-Bharati Raangoli (drawn without a dot grid). The rangoli material used is limestone rangoli powder, or even rice powder or ash is used in rural areas.

The dot Rangoli’s of Maharashtra are usually square rangoli’s drawn within boundaries of a calculated grid of dots, usually by connecting one dot to the other through lines. The floor is first smeared with a thick layer of “Gerun” (wet red mud paste), once dried, a parallel dot grid is created on top of this layer with rangoli powder. Then these dots are joined by straight lines to form a combination of various geometric motifs to form a pattern/design of repetitive shapes, while the dots remain invisible in the completed design. It is then filled with bright rangoli colours, which is typical of a Maharashtrian design. Bright colours brings positive vibrations and auspiciousness. Some Traditional & Festive Rangoli designs of Maharashtra also follow an interlaced dot grid.

It is observed that as we move southwards from Maharashtra to Tamilnadu, the rangoli patterns become curvilinear. Though the use of dot grid is common all over the region, the dots which remain invisible in Maharashtra becomes visible in the Southern states, as lines pass around the dots to form a pattern. Thus in Maharashtra traditionally the linear style exists, in the Muggulu designs of Andhra Pradesh and Rangavalli designs of Karnataka both the styles, linear and curved lines are used.

The above Soulart Raangoli designs are examples of typical Maharashtrian "Tipkyanchi Raangoli" made up of geometric motifs in repetitive patterns, filled with bright, vibrant colours and studded with diamonds and sandblast work.
