In Kerala a special floral Rangoli is created known as Poovidal or Pookolam. "Poov" means flower and "idal" means arrangement, thus Poovidal is a beautiful arrangement of flowers or it's petals of many different colours, to form a pattern that almost resembles a floral carpet.
It is usually drawn on the festival of Onam (Harvest Festival), whereby intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers are created on the floor, particularly at entrances, temple premises and other public places. This festival is celebrated to commemorate the great king “Lord Mahabali” of Kerla who is worshiped on this festival. Tradition of creating a Pookalam also called as Onapookkalam is extremely popular in Kerala and is followed as a ritual in every household during ten-day-long Onam celebrations. The traditional ritual of laying pookkalam (floral Rangoli) starts on Atham day. The pookkalam on this day is called Athapoo, and it is relatively small in size. The size of the pookkalam grows in size progressively with each day of the Onam festival. Traditionally, Atthapookalams include flowers endemic to Kerala or the Dashapushpam (10 flower types). Fire lamps are arranged in the middle and/or edges of the flower rangoli.
