Updated: Jul 29

It is known as Mandana in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. These are drawn on floor as well as walls with Chuna" (chalk paste) and is drawn with a thin stick or cotton balls, on walls or floor smeard with geroon (red-clay paste). The rangoli motifs include symbols of lord Ganesha, lamps, women at work, tigers, peacocks, grass, floral motifs, geometric shapes, and various patterns of straight and curved lines. These are usually free hand designs drawn without a dot grid. The peculiar character of a Manadana is that the rangoli designs have a fine meshwork, of parallel or curved lines or checkers or a circular design mesh work.

This Soulart Mandana possesses the auspicious motifs of Aum (the universal sound) in the center and fire lamps at its four corners. The entire design and border is composed of meshwork of fine lines drawn in various patterns.
