In Gujrati and Jain communities, it is known as Saathiya or Gahuli. These are drawn in the temples or place of worship, before performing every religious ritual. Traditionally this form of rangoli is drawn on a thin layer of whole (unbroken) rice grains, without a dot grid. It is also drawn by dusting a layer of white rangoli powder or various Rangoli colours or on the floor. In this layer, artistic free hand designs or rangoli motifs like Swastika, Aum, Kalash, Shankh, Surya, Chakra and many more, are drawn by fingertips or a fine stick. Just like the way one writes or draws on a layer of dust.
The entire Gahuli design appears like a beautiful maze puzzle. There are different types of Gahuli, of which the Nandavrat Gahuli is one of the most auspicious motifs in Jainism, it is basically a Swastik drawn within a square. The 4 arms of the Swastik continue to form the four boundaries of the square.
This Soulart Gahuli is design of a Diya & Bati (small flame lamp), the design of this gahuli orginates from two Swastik, one in the center of the flame and the other in center of the diya and continues further to complete the entire shape. The rays of the lamp and the rangoli border are studded with fine diamonds. The entire design appears like a maze puzzle (in the shape of a Diya &Bati) , which is a typical feature of any Gahuli.
