Types of Rangoli in India- Chowkpurana

In north Indian states mainly Utter Pradesh and Punjab it is known as Chowkpurana. Chowk is usually the word used for the area between an intersection of tracks or roads. Thus, a chowk is mostly square or rhombus in shape and purna means to fill. A chowk also means "auspicious area of home” whereas purana means "drawing on floor/wall."The Chowkpurana motifs are symbolic geometrical patterns which include lines, dots, squares, circles, triangles.


The motifs used are swastika, lotus, fish, conch shell, footprints of goddess Lakshmi, creepers, leaves, trees, flowers, animals and human symboli figures. It is generally drawn using dried rice flour or other forms of white dust powder. Women draw Chowkpurna designs on fesitvals and important religoius rituals on their thresholds for the well-being and prosperity of their family members as well as to welcome the visitors.
