Types of Rangoli in India- Aripana

Updated: Jul 29

It is known as Aripana in Bihar. Aripan (meaning – Smear) is a type of Mithila art that originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, particularly in the village of Madhubani.

To create an Aripan a paste of powdered rice and water, known as “pithar” is prepared. It is drawn by dipping two fingers of the hand into the pithar, to produce beautiful, geometrical patterns on the floor through their swift movements. These are usually drawn free hand without a dot grid.

Natural colours like Vermillion and local red clay for red; turmeric and flower petals for yellow; leaves for green; soot for black and crushed berries for blue, are used to colour the Aripans. The rangoli motifs are derived from the nature, symbolic figures of gods and goddesses as well as other traditional symbols like swastika, lamps, yantras etc. are used in the designs. There are various types of Aripans drawn on various occassions like the Tusari Pooja Aripan, Sanjha Aripan, Sasthi-pooja-Aripan, Gatra-Sankrant Aripan, etc.

This Soulart Rangoli is known as the "Astadhal Kamal" - the eight petal lotus, it possesses the motifs of Shankh (conch), Chakra (lord krishna's weapon), Gada (lord hanumans weapon), Padma (lotus), Trishul & Damroo (Instrument of lord shiva) and the Sun & Moon gods. It also possesses the auspicious symbol of Swastik, in the center surrounded by stars.
