It is known as Alpona in Bengal and parts of Gharwal. The word Alpona is derived from the Sanskrit word Alimpana', (meaning 'to plaster with' or 'tocoat with). The designs are made by using rice-powder or diluted rice paste. Powdered colours (produced from dried leaves), charcoal, burnt earth, coloured chalk, vermilion, flower petals or grains are also used. Traditional Alpona motifs include sun, leaves, flowers, Lakshmi footprints, owl, fish, betel, rice stem, lotus, plough, ladder, sindur box, and so on.
The peculiar feature of a typical Alpona is that they are generally large white circular designs. The design starts with a traditional or floral motif in the centre, followed by emerging rings of concentric circles, made of beautiful and intr
icate patterns. This type of rangoli is made by holding a small piece of cloth soaked in a paste o
f powdered rice with water, held between the fingers. The swift movement of fingers creates large white circular carpet like rangoli on the ground.
This Soulart Alpona is inspired from traditional Alpona and has a typical large circular white appearance. The design starts with a floral motif in the centre and grows outward in concentric circles, through various motifs repeating to form a beautiful pattern, whereby each circle depicts a different circular white design. The entire Alpona is studded with diamonds, pearls and sandblast work in gold and silver.
