It is known as Aaipan in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand in the Himalays. Aipan patterns and motifs are typical to the region of Kumaon. Every Aipan design has a meaning attached to it. The Swastik symbol has a great significance in Aipan. It is drawn in some form or other during most of the religious rituals. Straight or curved lines outlined by a dotted line is a peculiar feature of Aipan motifs. Any Aipan without the dotted lines are considered incomplete and inauspicious, all the motifs, group or block of lines in an Aipan always end with the dots.
The Aipans have specific names and significance based on the occasions on which they are drawn like Vasudhara (for the pooja altar), Lakshmi Padchinha, Lakshmi Peeth and Lakshmi Yantra (for Diwali), Dhuliarghya Var Chauka and/ or Acharya Chauka (for marriage ceremonies), etc. Linear Aipan designs are drawn in front of the house doors daily.
This Soulart Aipan depicts an auspecious symbolic motif of "Foot rpints of Godess Lakshmi"(which is a symbol of wealth and prosperity), in the center of a dense & decorative Star shaped Aipan, surrounded by fine stars. The large artistic border including all motifs are outlined by finely dotted border which the special characteristic feature of the Aipan designs.
