Types of Rangoli in India -Sanjhi

Updated: Jul 29

Sanjhi is an ancient art form based on handmade paper stencils, prevailed in Uttar Pradesh. This is an ancient art of religious origin, in which drawings are created on the ground or on water with the help of finely cut stencils in wood or paper.

The stencils are placed on the floor or ground and the gaps are filled with white Rangoli powder or various rangoli colours and then the stencil is lifted out, to create beautiful auspicious drawings mostly of Radha & Krishna. Expert Sanjhi artists can also create Sanjhi on water. A plate or bowl is filled with water and kept aside till the water surface becomes still and then on this still surface of water the stencil is held and the rangoli pwder is dropped to create the designs.

For many centuries, this art has persisted within the community of Vaishnava priests in Mathura and Vrindavan region of India. This Sanjhi art is different from that of local festival “Sanjhi Pooja” mainly celebrated in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Western UP. whereby particularly women and young girls create an image of “Sanjhi Godess” moulded using clay, mud or cow dung and decorate it with stars, moon, sun or flowers and worship it for Nine days during the festival of Navratra.

This Soulart Sanjhi is based on the stencil art. It depits Lord Krishna playing his flute. The Sanjhi has a border of fine peacock feathers. Lord Krishna’s jewelry and the border is studded with diamonds.
